State Senator Cristina Castro secured $200,000 to sustain and enhance local arts programming across the Northwest Suburbs.
“Side Street Studio Arts is reimagining how inclusivity and art can come together to enhance our downtown area,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “By investing in creative programming, enhanced venues and arts organizations, we’re opening the doors to more exhibits and performances that will sustain Elgin’s economic and cultural strengths now and into the future.”
The funding was awarded through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Tourism Attractions Grant Program. Created to boost the state’s tourism economy, the program awarded over $1.6 million to 11 grantees in the latest round of funding for projects that will enhance local attractions, increase visitor rates and generate economic growth in communities across Illinois.
In Castro’s district, Side Street Studio Arts is receiving $200,000 to repurpose a historic building in downtown Elgin into an accessible hub for visual art, live performance and gallery showcases. By consolidating their operations in a larger, more inclusive space, SSSA will be better able to serve the growing artistic, cultural and economic needs of the Elgin community. In 2024, more than 17,000 people participated in SSSA’s arts programs. With funding to expand and upgrade, Side Street will be better equipped to host diverse arts programming — including performances, exhibitions and festivals — while serving as a welcoming hub for community engagement.
“We are deeply grateful for this investment in Side Street Studio Arts’ Future Home and in the future of the arts in downtown Elgin. This support will help us transform a long-vacant building into an inclusive, accessible, and vibrant hub for creativity and community connection,” said Side Street Studio Arts Founder & Executive Director Erin Rehberg. “Side Street is committed to providing free and low-cost arts opportunities for all, and this funding helps us bring new energy, visitors, and economic growth to our city. Thank you to Senator Castro and the state of Illinois for recognizing the power of the arts to revitalize and strengthen communities.”
