EAST DUNDEE – State Senator Cristina Castro announced that East Dundee will receive a $250,000 grant through Illinois’ Safe Routes to School program to improve pedestrian safety and expand opportunities for children and families to safely walk and bike in their communities.

“Improving accessible paths to school is crucial in promoting independence and safety for students,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “Encouraging students to bike or walk to school builds community and healthy habits.”

The $250,000 grant will support the Village of East Dundee with the construction of a 5-foot-wide public sidewalk along North Van Buren St. and Wilmette Ave. from Roslyn Rd. to Cleveland Ave., linking various school campuses to the existing sidewalk network and increasing accessibility to local community spaces.

The Safe Routes to School program is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation using federal funding to improve safety and encourage walking, biking and rolling to school. Projects funded through the program include sidewalk improvements, traffic safety measures, public education efforts and community outreach initiatives.
